In Oct of 2007, I joined Darren Berrecloth, Cam McCaul, Jeremy Grant of Freeride Films, and Todd Barber of H5 Events, to go to the Gobi Desert in China. An area known as “The Flaming Mountains” that Todd had researched would serve to be an epic location for us to film some progressive mountain biking. A five hour flight out of Beijing to the north west corner of China near the Mongolian/Kazakhstan border, then a half day drive would bring us to the city of Turpan on the outskirts of The Flaming Mountains . We then spent 11 days exploring and filming this unbelievable landscape.
“That was the scariest thing I have ever done on my bike” says Darren as he rides up to me after descending a 1200 ft chute. “But also one of the greatest”.
The trip to China was a success on all levels. We will most likely be returning to this area next year.
